사진 일기: "The Club"

2월 1일 토요일: Noontime Tennis 에서 Todd, Dan, George 와

파트너를 달리하면서 세 세트. 모두들 재밌어 했다.

테니스는 'tough'한 게임일수록 더 재밌다.

2월 2일 일요일: 낮 기온이 72도(섭씨 22도).

Beck Dorey-Stein 의 "From the Corner of the Oval"을 오후

두 시까지 읽고, 두 시 반쯤 부터는 유타 공원에서 한인들과 테니스.

관심들이 없어 보여서 수퍼볼(중계)은 집에 와서 혼자 봤다. (여러모로

나는 여기 한인들 중에서는 소수 그룹에 속한다. 시간을 때우기 위해

책이 필요한 게 아니라 책을 즐기기 위해 시간이 필요하다고 하면,

글쎄, 몇이나 고개를 끄덕일지.) 내가 응원한 Kansas City

Chiefs 의 역전승이다. 재밌었다.

2월 3일 월요일: 종일 눈.

도서관에 들렀더니, 한 주쯤 전에 예약한 책이 드디어 'ready'다. 빌려온

Leo Damrosch, "The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends

Who Shaped an Age" (2019) 의 'Prologue'를 우선 읽기 시작한다:

This is the story of a group of extraordinary individuals,

a constellations of talent in eighteenth-century London that was

known simply as the Club. ... But there was another, perhaps even

more important, requirement for Club membership: you had to

be good company -- ready to talk, laugh, drink, eat, and argue,

until late into the night at the Turk's Head Tavern. Unlike some

later clubs, it had no premises of its own, but met

in an ordinary London pub.

The members included Samuel Johnson, James Boswell,

Edmund Burke, Edward Gibbon, and Adam Smith -- arguably the

greatest British critic, biographer, political philosopher, historian,

and economist of all time. ...

며칠 전 인터넷에서 읽은, 춘천의 친구 위 교수가 2016년에 만든

'햇무리'라는 토론 모임이 생각났다. 매달 한 번씩 모인다는데,

첫 모임의 토론 주제는 (역시나!) '자유란 무엇인가?' 였다고.

여기도 그런 모임이 있어서 '자유 의지'에 관해

이야기를 나눌 수 있으면 좋으련만 ....
