George Eliot 의 소설이 좋아서 대여섯 권을 거의 연이어 읽은 건 오래전인데,

몇 년 전에는 그녀의 시가 한 편 -- "Two Lovers" -- 실린 시선집을 발견하고

그 때문에도 그 책을 샀었다. 이번에는, John Gross 가 엮은,

"The Oxford Book of Essays" (1991) 를 같은 이유로 사게 됐다 (사실, 비슷한

책들을 몇 권이나 갖고 있다). 책에 한 편  실려 있는 George Eliot 의

에세이 "Thomas Carlyle" 를 Smoky Hill 도서관 라운지에서 반쯤,

그리고 집에 와서 마저 다 읽었다. 역시 George Eliot 이다.

 

"He does not, perhaps, enrich your stock of data, but he clears

away the film from your eyes .... He does not, perhaps, convince

you, but he strikes you, undeceives you, animates you....

 

"For there is hardly a superior or active mind of this generation

that has not been modified by Carlyle's writings."

 

 

 

월요일 아침 워싱턴 Park (저스틴, 존, 맞은 편에 세르지오).

참 좋은 사람들이다, 무엇보다 그게 유쾌하다.
