Lydia Davis의 단편집 "Can't and Won't" 본문 283쪽에는 120여편의 단편이 실려 있다. 도서관에서 빌린 책으로 표제작과 25쪽짜리 "The Seals'를 포함해서 모두 25편을 읽었는데, 그중 7편이 한 문장짜리다. 더는 안 읽기로 하고서도 그런대로 재밌었다는 생각이 들어서 어쩔까 하다가 아침에 책을 반납했다.

 

"Lydia Davis is a short story writer, novelist, and translator.... Davis is best known for her very short, micro- or “flash” fiction; many of her stories are a single sentence or paragraph long. She has translated novels and works of philosophy from French, including Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (2010) and Marcel Proust’s Swann’s Way (2003)." --- Poetry Foundation

 

전에 "Sudden Fiction Latino" (2010)에 실린 'sudden fiction"이라고 불리는 1~4쪽짜리 '짧은 단편'을 두세 편 읽은 적은 있지만 한 문장이나 한 구절짜리 'flash 소설'을 읽은 건 처음이다. 언제였나, 우리 엽편(葉篇) 소설을 읽으면서 같은 것에 대한 '엽편'과 'sudden'의 이름 차이 -- 공간/시간, 정적/동적 -- 가 흥미로웠던 생각이 난다. 엽편으로 치면, sudden이 후박나무 잎사귀에 쓴 거라면 flash(섬광)는 싸리나무 잎새에 쓴 소설이랄까.
