시인의 첫사랑 시 (5)

Seamus Heaney

 

[ 아래는 작년 가을 "사진 일기"에 "First Loves" 책 표지 사진을 올리며 덧븥였던 거다. ]

 

 "The first poems I heard were short, and i didn't even think of them as poems. They were bits of blow-in in the daily talk, like leaves in a gust, alive and familiar and a delight -- but no big deal"로 시작되는 Seamus Heaney에는 그가 어렸을 적 들은 couplets(2행 연구) 넷이 나오는데 그중 셋을 또 읽어본다. 매력적이다 (왠지 Edgar Lee Master의 시집 "Spoon River Anthology"가 떠올라서 한참만에 책장에서 찾아냈다):

 

          My granny was Doherty, she was the stuff,

          She hunted the Orangemen through Gulladuff.

 

          The praties are boiling and that's a fine joke,

          The herrings are coming in Doherty's boat.

 

          Two sticks standing and one across

          Spells paddy Brennan in the Hillhead Moss.
