Zbigniew Herbert 시 "Mr Cogito and the Imagination"

요즘은 Edward Hirsch, "100 Poems to Break Your Heart"를 매일 몇 편씩 읽고 있는데 꽤 재밌다. (새로 읽기 시작한 Kiran Desai의 소설 "The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny'가 처지고 있다.) 한 편의 시를 되읽을수록 재미가 더하겠지만 나는 그러지 못하고 자꾸 다음 시로 넘어간다. 대신, 어떤 시는 여기에 옮겨 적으려고 한다. 우선, Zbigniew Herbert의 2부로 구성된 시 "Mr Cogito and the Imagination"의 1부로 시작한다. 생각이 나와 비슷해 보이는 작가 V의 에세이는, 몇 년 전 일이지만, 그래서 읽다 말고 더는 그의 에세이를 안 읽고 싶어 하는데 시인 Zbigniew Herbert는 오히려 그런 느낌 때문에 그의 다른 시도 좀 더 유심히 읽게 될 것 같다.

Mr Cognito has never trusted

the tricks of the imagination

 

the piano at the top of the Alps

played concerts false to his ear

 

he had no regard for labyrinths

the Sphinx filled him with disgust

 

he lived in a cellarless house

without mirrors or dialectics

 

jungles of tangled images

were never his homeland

 

he rarely got carried away

on the wings of a metaphor

he then plunged like Icarus

into the arms of the Great Mother

 

he adored tautologies

explanations

idem per idem

 

a bird is a bird

slavery slavery

a knife a knife

death is death

 

he loved

a flat horizon

a straight line

earth's gravity
