런던 지하철의 시: Seamus Heaney, "The Railroad Children"

이번엔 또, 동네 도서관 라운지에서, Gerard Benson, Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert 편집, "Poems On The Underground," Ilustrated Edition (1992; 원본 1991)을 건졌다. 줏었다고 하는 편이 더 맞겠다. 런던 지하철 객실 벽에 1986년 1월에 처음으로 그리고 그 후 5년간 게시됐던, 그 차례대로의, 시 100편에 더해, 92년 판에 추가된 15편이 이 책에 실려 있다.

 

서울 지하철역 스크린도어에 시가 등장한 것이 내 기억보다는 훨씬 늦게 2008년부터란다. 이 책 1991년 서문에 따르면, "Similar projects have sprung up elsewhere in Britain and abroad, with poems riding public transport systems in Newcastle, West Yorkshire, Dublin and Stuttgart, and decorating bus and railway platforms in Vienna and Melbourne."

When we climed the slopes of the cutting

We were eye-level with the white cups

Of the telegraph poles and the sizzling wires.

 

Like lovely freehand they curved for miles

East and miles west beyond us, sagging

Under their burden of swallows.

 

We were small and thought we knew nothing

Worth knowing. We thought words travelled the wires

In the shiny patches of raindrops,

 

Each one seeded full with the light

Of the sky, the gleam of the lines, and ourselves

So infinitesimally scaled

 

We could stream through the eye of a needle.
