  • 요새 읽은 책들: "The Genius Within" &
    책 읽는 즐거움 2020. 11. 15. 11:12

미국 선거일 부터, 두 주가 지난, 오늘까지도 책보다는 뉴스 보고

(NBC, ABC, CBS) 읽는(온라인 뉴욕타임즈) 데에 너무 많이 시간을

    쓴다.

    소설

Kiran Desai, "The inheritance of Loss" (2006).

       Michael Ondaatje, "Warlight" (2006).

       Halldór Laxness, "Independent People" (1946).

    비소설

Frank T. Vertosick, Jr., "The Genius Within" (2002).

    "Independent People"에서

After this Finna decided to tend the cow herself. She took little

Nonni along with her. Those were good days. They were serene

    days and quite undemonstrative, like the best days in one's life;

the boy never forgot them. Nothing happens; one simply lives

and breathes and wishes for nothing more, and nothing more.

    (p 188)

One had only to look at the creature that once had been so

lonely and see how light was her step now as she trotted away

out of the home-field with the calf prancing giddily at her side

-- she had no longer any need of consolation or caresses....

Care-free in her new life, she would wander off with her son

far along the mountain and would almost lose herself, so

independent of mankind did she consider herself. (p 225)

But why was she weeping over this poem? It was because she

understood both love and the heath, ... for he who  understands

the heath understands love, and he who  understands love

    understands the heath. (p 321)

"The sunsets were lovely at Urtharsel," she said, "when my dear

husband Ragnar had put on his big coat and was riding

northwards over the moors in search of his sheep, to clip them

whenever he found them. (p 459)

    "The Genius Within"에서

When it comes to understanding the true nature of life and

intelligence, I submit that there are no experts yet, only eager

amateurs like myself. -- "To the Reader"

I believe that intelligence and the living process are one and

    the same ... (p 5)

[P]attern recognition ... is the conerstone of biological reasoning.

Indeed, we can define biological intelligence as the ability to

learn old patterns and extrapolate to new situations. (p 10)

Life is, after all, a chemical process. (p 90)

The approximately one hundred phenotypes within my body

(muscle, nerve, bone, and so on) are merely different steady

states of my one unique genotype. (p 118)

Life began as a molecular network long before the existence of

    genes. (p 206)

All biological learning, whether in the simplest cell or the

smartest brain, is a local fitness competition operating on the

connection weights of networks. (p 219)

This book assumes that all living ensembles operate within the

network paradigm of computation; that's what makes them alive

in the first place. (p 235)

[A]ll learning, even cognitive learning, may require some

gentically determined set of connection weights as a starting

    points. (p 245)

읽다 말고 반납한, 예약하고 오래 기다렸던, 도서관 책

       Cho Nam-Ju, "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" (2019년 판).

Jenny Erpenbeck, "Not A Novel: A Memoir in Pieces" (2020).

더 안 읽고 싶어지거나 (조남주) 읽은 만큼으로 족해서

       (Erpenbeck) 였다. 시간도 시력도 소중하다.
