요새 읽은 책들: Quade, Heaney, Austen, Dreiser

Kirstin Valdez Quade, "Night At The Fiestas: Stories" (2015)

 

 

문학서에 관한 대화 (The Writer's Library)에서, Susan Choi 가

'really strong' 한 데뷰 작품이라고 해서 도서관에서 빌렸는데, 다

읽기까지 다른 책은 안 잡게 됐었다. (사진: Kirstin V. Quade)

 

열 편 중에서도 특히 인상에 남은 것은:

   Canute Commands the Tides

 

 

Seamus Heaney 의 에세이집 "Finders Keepers" (2002)

 

그때그때 한두 편 에세이를 읽곤했었는데 이번에 다 읽었다.

 

"Some works continue to combine the sensation of liberation

with that of consolidation; ... they go on to offer, at each

re-reading, the satisfaction of a foundation being touched and

the excitement of an energy being released."

 

     But hush, for I have lost the theme,

     Its joy or night seem but a dream;

     Up there some hawk or owl has struck,

     And its cry distracts my thought.

이를테면, 자매이지만 Anne Elliot 와 Mary 는 개성이 상당히

다르다. 사람 사이에 누가 누구를 좋아하게 되는 것은 그럴

만해서 일 게다. 

 

Theodore Dreiser, "The Bulwark" (1946)

 

 

Theodore Dreiser 의 이 (유고작) 소설을 읽고나니

Thomas Mann 의 "Buddenbrooks" (1901) 가 생각난다.
