시 읽는 재미, Oxford comma

Robert Hass의 "Poet's Choice"에서 읽은 이야기다. 시에서는 작은 것들이 크게 중요할 수 있다면서, Hass는, 아래 두 줄의 차이를 생각해 보란다:

 

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

 

"To my ear this makes two entirely different -- almost opposite -- meanigs. In the first line the emphasis is evenly distributed. Lovely=dark=deep. It's a peaceful, dundisturbing scene. In the second "dark and deep" is the kind of lovelyness, and the  second phrase is spoken rapidly, as if it were a darting glance at a darkness and deepness one doesn't want to linger over too long." Hass의 말이다. 나도 같은 생각, 같은 느낌이다.

 

Hass에 의하면, 둘째 줄이 Robert Frost가 그의 시 "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"에 쓴 건데, Dartmouth 교수 Edward Lathem이 Frost 사후에 "The Poetry of Robert Frost"(1969)를 편집하면서 첫째 줄처럼 바꿨고 그 책이 프로스트 시집의 표준판이 되면서 시인들은 어처구니없는 이 '시 다시 쓰기'에 대해 계속 불평했었는데 25년 만에야 (출판사) Library of America 덕분에 원래대로 읽을 수 있게 되었다고 한다.

 

시인들이 당연히 불평할 만하다. Lathem 교수는 lovely, dark, deep의 단순한 나열로만 읽고서 영어 표준 문법대로 and deep 앞에 comma를 넣은 것 같다. 이런 comma를 Oxford comma라고 부른다는 걸 나는 얼마 전에야 우연히 어느 책에서 보고 알게 됐다.

 

내가 같은 제목의 시집을 갖고 있는 게 생각나서 보니 바로 Lathem의 69년판이다. 시를 찾아서 쉼표 빼기 표시를 했다. 또 생각이 나서 찾아보니, "여국현의 영시 해설"에도 Lathem 버전으로 되어 있다.
