도서관 라운지의 책값을 재작년엔가 4불(하드카버는 5불)로 올렸다가 작년에는 다시 3불, 4불로 내렸다. 머핀이나 스콘이 4불이 넘는 등, 오른 물가를 고려한 것 같은데, 커피도 늘 집에서 가져간 걸 마시는 터에, 하드카버 이 책을 라운지에서 사면서 또 좀 미안한 마음이 들었다. 그래도, 기중 받은 책들을 판 돈이 도서관을 돕는데 쓰이는 지라, 카운터의 아가씨는 매번 고맙다고 한다. 다음날 집에 있던 "The Grapes of Wrath"와 "Cannery Row"는 도서관에 기증했다. 사오십 년 전에 있었을 "The Grapes"는 포켓북인데 그때는 물론 작은 글씨에 전혀 신경 쓰지 않았다는 게 지금은 신기하게까지 느껴진다. "Totilla Flat"을 재밌게, 그리고 눈에도 편하게, 읽었다.

   It is a time of quiet joy, the sunny morning. When the glittery dew is on the mallow weeds, each leaf holds a jewel which is beautiful if not valuable. This is no time for hurry or for bustle. Thoughts are slow and deep and golden in the morning. (p. 26)

 

   Pilon's eyes brightened. "I have a plan that I thought out," he said. When I was a little boy, we lived by the railroad. Every day when the train went by, my brother and I threw rocks at the engine, and the firemen threw coal at us. Sometimes we picked up a big bucketful of coal and took it in to our mother. Now I thought maybe we could take rocks down on the pier. When the boats come near, we will call names, we will throw rocks. How can those fishermen get back at us? Can they throw oars, or nets? No! They can only throw mackerel."

   Danny stood up joyfully. "Now there is a plan!" he cried. "How this little Pilon of ours is our friend! What would we do without our Pilon? Come, I know where there is a great pile of rocks."
