Ted Kooser 의 시 "Visiting Mountains"

 

Ted Kooser 의 시 "Visiting Mountains" 를 번역해본다.

시 원문을 읽을 때마다 다르게 읽히고 느낌도 다르다.

번역이라기보다 나의 이 시 읽기의, 엉거주춤하게 잡힌, 한

스냅샷이라는 게 더 맞겠다.

산을 오르며  / Ted Kooser

평원은 우릴 무시하지만

산은 귀를 기울인다,

바위마다에

숨 소리도 안 들리는

수많은 청중들. 가벼운

일상의 애기들을 나누며

우린 길을 잡아 오른다.

저 아래 벌판의 풀들이

토론하면서

이리 기룰고 저리 기운다;

단어들이 옥수수 껍질처럼

들판 위로 날린다.

여긴, 산의 배려 속에

아무 할 말이 없다.

               

산에 오르면, 고고한 사람이 아니지만 저절로 고고해져서도 좋다.

Bruckhardt 가 "The Civilization of The Renaissance in Italy" 에 쓴,

이탈리아 르네상스 시인 페트라르카(Petrarca 또는 Petrarch) 가

구름 위 높은 산 정상에 오른 이야기가 생각나서 다시 읽어본다:

... and at last they reached the top. A description of the

view from the summit would be looked for in vain, not

because the poet was insensible to it, but on the contrary,

because the impression was too overwhelming. His whole

past life, with all its follies, rose before his mind;... he

opened a book which then was his constant companion,

the Confessions of St. Augustine, and his eyes fell on the

passage in the tenth chapter, 'and men go forth, and

admire lofty mountains and broad seas, ... and forget their

own selves while doing so.' His brother, to whom he read

these words, could not understand why he closed  the

book and said no more.

그보다 앞에, Petrach 에게는 "자연을 즐김이 지적 추구의, 그가 가장

좋아하는, 반려"라는 구절도 있다.
