동네 도서관의 '새 비도서(Nonfiction)' 서가를 한 번 흘낏 보고 눈에

들어온 책 Anna Reser and Leila McNeil, "Forces of Nature: The

Women Who Changed Science" (2021) 를 꺼내서는 아무렇게나

펼친다. 왼쪽엔 Katsuko Saruhashi 의 사진, 오른쪽엔 그녀에

대한 1쪽짜리 기사다(아래에 부분 인용).

 

 

Katsuko Saruhashi (Mar. 22,1920 - Sep. 29, 2007)

 

"At the age of twenty-one, Saruhashi quit her job at an insurance firm

to become a chemistry student at the Imperial Womne's College

of Science.... After graduating, ... she accepted a position at the

Meteorological Research Institute, and while there, she worked

towards her PhD in chemistry at the University of Tokyo.

 

"She developed Saruhashi's Table, a method for measuring CO2

using pH, temperature, and chlorinity, which has become

a global standrad. She also discovered that the Pacific

Ocean releases more CO2 than it absorbs."

 

친척 언니가 미국에서 화학 박사가 된 얘기를 듣고서

아내도 유학 생각을 했다고 했다. 사루하시 가츠코로 해서

과학자의 길을 택한 일본 여성이 꽤 될 것 같다.

 

 

저 책을 다른 날 또 아무렇게나 펼쳤는데 이번엔 Antoine Lavoisier 의

부인 Marie-Ann Lavoisier 이야기다. Jacques-Louis David 가 그린

부부의 초상화가 곁들여 있다. 프랑스 화학자 앙투안 라부아지에

화학 책에서 만났지만 부인에 대해서는, 화학 연구의

파트너였다는 것은 더구나, 처음 읽는다.
