Jill Ker Conway, "True North: A Memoir" (1994)
(Jill Ker Conway 에 대한 뉴욕타임즈 기사에서:
“Young women are trained to think they should marry
someone who is a great romantic love,” Dr. Conway told
The Globe and Mail of Canada in 2002. “You should really
marry someone who respects your working self and creative
ability and wants to enter into a relationship where each
supports the other. And that’s not the romantic story.”
Verlyn Klinkenborg, reviewing “The Road From Coorain”
[Conway's first memoir, a best seller] in The New York Times,
called it “the work of a writer who relentlessly tugs at the
cultural fences around her until they collapse.)

"His moral integrity, courage, and devoution to humanistic
learning were certainly my compass point, the true north
one needed to to set directions on this continent. But I
now knew there were going to be times when I'd
have to navigate alone." (p. 132)
"But I wanted to live where there was some fairness and
recognition of the people and cultures our ancestors had
so unthinkingly despoiled." (p. 181)
"In coeducational academies, where the secondary role of
women students was not so vividly symbolized as at Oberlin,
trouble quickly developed between the sexes. Something
happened that no one had planned. Women did better
academically than men.... At Berkeley, the initial warm
welcome given women students by the men quickly
changed to hostility when they took most of the
academic laurels at year's end." (p. 238-239)
