Ann Patchett 의 소설 "Bel Canto"나 "Commonwealth"보다도

더 재미있게 읽은 것 같다.

 

Danny 가 세 살 때 어머니가 집을 나간 이후의 Danny 와

일곱 살 위 누나 Maeve 의 삶을 Danny 가 회고해서 쓰는 식의 소설이다.

Danny 가 열다섯(?) 살 때 아버지가 세상을 떠나고 남매는 계모에 의헤

집 'Dutch House'에서 쫓겨난다. Dutch House 에는 Maeve 의 열 살 때

초상화가 걸려 있는데, 위 책 표지의 저 그림이다. (줄거리나

독후감 쓸 여유는 없고, 표지 그림 이야기는 하고 싶었다.)

 

저자의 최근 에세이집 "These Precious Days" (2021)

서평(맨 아래에 링크)에서 읽은 저자의 세 아버지 이야기가,

소설의 아래 구절을 읽으면서 생각났었다:

 

"Men!" Maeve said, nearly shouting. "Men leave their children

all the time and the world celebrates them for it. The Buddha

left and Odysseus left and no one gave a shit about their

sons. They set out on their noble journeys to do whatever

the hell they wanted to do and thousands of years later

we're still singing about it.' (p. 297)
