Christian Morgenstern의 시 세 편

Angela Merkel의 회고록 "Freedom" (2014)에서 독일 시인 Christian Morgenstern의 시집 Alle Galgenlieder (영역본 Gallows Songs,1967)에 실린 "A Pug's Life"를 읽었다. 고교 시절 얘기에서 그녀는 그의 시를 매우 좋아했다고 썼다.

 

A Pug's Life

 

Upon a wall, a pug will take a seat:

He'll find a spot that juts into the street,

 

And from this vantage point he will observe

Life passing by in all its vim and verve.

 

O man, take care, lest you this fate befall

And you become a pug upon a wall.

 

 

위 시를 읽고 생각이 나서, 독일 철학자/번역가 Walter Kaufmann이 편집, 영역한 "Twenty German Poets" (1962)에서 "To Nietzsche"와 "L'art Pour L' art"를 읽어본다. 둘 다 Christian Morgenstern, "Epigramme und Sprüche" (1920)에 실린 시다.

Folly you may lead to fall;

for me you were bread and wine.

What you gave me you'll give all

who are of my kind.

 

 

L'art Pour L'art

 

L'art pour l'art, that is to say:

We've only strength enough to play.
