Neither Out Far Nor In Deep / Robert Frost

 

The people along the sand
All turn and look one way.
They turn their back on the land.
They look at the sea all day.

As long as it takes to pass
A ship keeps raising its hull;
The wetter ground like glass
Reflects a standing gull.

The land may vary more;
But wherever the truth may be---
The water comes ashore,
And the people look at the sea.

They cannot look out far.
They cannot look in deep.
But when was that ever a bar
To any watch they keep?

멀리도 깊이도 못 보면서, 그러면서도 사람들은, '땅'을 등지고 '바다'를, 보기를

그만두지 않는다.

이 시를 로버트 프로스트의 가장 좋으면서 가장 덜 알려진 너댓 편 중 하나로

꼽은, 시보다 시 비평으로 더 유명한 듯한, 시인 Randall Jarrell 의 눈이 우리와

별 다르지 않아 보이는 점이 내겐 흥미롭다.
