Bertolt Brecht 의 시 (John Willet 번역) 네 편 중에서.
The Burning of the books
When the Regime commanded that books with harmfulknowledge
Should be publicly burned on all sides
Oxen were forced to drag cart loads of books
To the bonfires, a banished
Writer, one of the best, scanning the list of the
Burned, was shocked to find that his
Books had been passed over. He rushed to his desk
On wings of wrath, and wrote a letter to those in power.
Burn me! he wrote with flying pen, burn me. Haven’t my
books
Always reported the truth? And here you are
Treating me like a liar! I command you:
Burn me!1940
Fleeing from my fellow-countryman
I have now reached Finland. Friends
Whom yesterday I didn't know, put up some beds
In clean rooms. Over the radio
I hear victory bulletins of the scum of the earth. Cautiously
I examine a map of the continent. high up in the Lapland
Toward the Arctic Ocean
I can still see a small door.
I, the Survivor
I know of course; it's simply luck
That I've survived so many friends. But last night in a dream
I heard those friends say of me: 'Survival of the fittest'
And I hated my self.
(김광규 시인이 번역한 이 시의 제목은 "살아남은 자의 슬픔,"
"살아남은 자의 __" 형태의 제목으로는 더없이 적절하다는 생각이다.)
