작은 참새들이

보도에서

저들 관심을 끄는

것들에 대해

날카로운 목소리로

다투면서

천진스레 총총거린다.

그런데 더 현명한 우리는

어느 쪽이든

입을 다문다

우리가 선한 생각을 하는지

악한 생각을 하는지

아무도 모른다.

그런가 하면,

개똥을 주워 모으며

돌아다니는 노인은

아래만 보면서

도랑 속을 걷고 있다

그의 걸음걸이는

주일

설교단에 오르는

성공회 목사의 발걸음보다도

더욱 위엄있다.

이런 것들이

뭐라 표현할 수 없이 나를 놀라게 한다.

제목은, 풍경을 보여주면서 목사도 등장하는 시여서, 그냥

'파스토랄'로 그리고 'dog-lime'은, lime (과일 라임 또는

석회)처럼 보이는 개똥으로 이해해서 '개똥'으로 번역했다.

부드럽게 읽히면서 대체로 쉽게 이해될 이런 영시를 굳이

번역해보는 것은, 일종의 언어 게임이랄 수도 있는, 시

번역의 재미 때문이다. 그래서 또 대강 번역하고 만다.

Pastoral

The little sparrows
hop ingenuously
about the pavement
quarreling
with sharp voices
over those things
that interest them.
But we who are wiser
shut ourselves in
on either hand
and no one knows
whether we think good
or evil.
      Meanwhile,
the old man who goes about
gathering dog-lime
walks in the gutter
without looking up
and his tread
is more majestic than
that of the Episcopal minister
approaching the pulpit
of a Sunday.
      These things
astonish me beyond words
