Charles Simic, "No Land In Sight: Poems" (2022)

 

 노시인(38년생) 찰스 시믹의 최근 시집들에서,

그가 일상에서 보고 느낀 것들을 간단히, 자주 유머스럽게, 적은

짧은 시들을 읽는 것은 특이한 즐거을 준다.

 

이 시집에 실린 73편의 시 중에서 여섯 편은 the New Yorker

등에서 읽고 이미 이 블로그에 번역, 소개한 걸로 기억한다:

 

"November," "Could That Be Me?"

"There Is Nothing Quieter," "Windy Day,"

"Left Out of the Bible," "The Wind Has Died."

 

이 시집에서 "I Watched the Wind," "First Thing in the Morning,"

"My Life Is as Real as Yours" 세 편을 더 번역, 소개한다. 늘

그렇지만 이 시들도, 무엇보다, 원문의 재미 때문에 소개하고

싶은 건데, 역시 최근에 발표된 것들이라 그런지,

인터넷에서 원문 'Link'를 못 찾았다.

 

이를테면, "My Life Is as Real as Yours"라는 귀뚜라미의

말은, 그렇다면, 또 내가 귀뚜라미에게 할 말이기도 하니 재밌다.

 

 

 

나는 바람이

 

서둘러 해답을 찾으려고,

쓰레기와 함께 내던져진

두꺼운 백과사전의

페이지들을 휙휙 넘기는 걸 보았지.

 

 

아침에는 가장 먼저

 

당신은 새들이 마당에서

수다 떠는 걸 엿듣지요,

당신에 대해 뭐라는지

꼭 알고 싶어서요.

 

 

내 삶은 당신의 삶처럼 진짜입니다

Poet Charles Simic Dies at 84

 

아래는 위 기사에서:

 

"But if they found you were interested in reading they just kept

handing books to you.”

 

His parents could not afford to send him to college, but he attended

night classes at the University of Chicago while working as a

proofreader and office boy for The Chicago Sun-Times.

 

"I started thinking about a remark of the painter Paul Klee, that if a

young man is to accomplish something he has to find something

truly his own. Well, I had a kind of minimalist urge, and so I started

writing poems about the simplest things. Household objects: a

knife, a fork, a spoon, my shoes.”

 

Mr. Simic attended New York University, working at night to pay

his tuition.
