Charles Simic이 다시 고쳐 쓴 "Late Arrival"

Charles Simic의 시 "Late Arrival"을, 이번에 다시 도서관에서

빌려다 본, 2013년에 나온 그의 시집  "New and Selected

Poems: 1962-2012"에서 읽고서 한두 시구의 표현이 재미있기도

해서 번역, 포스팅해 볼 생각이 들었다. 그런데, 원문을

'link' 시키려 찾아낸, Poetry (Oct. 1993)에 발표된 "Late Arrival" 

('원본'이라고 부르자)에서는 앞에 말한 시구들의 표현이 다르다.

 

원본과 수정본을 함께 읽어보니, 시인이 이 시구들로 표현하려고

했던 것에 대한 내 느낌에 더 신뢰가 간다. 그리고 그런 각도에서

수정본이 원본보다 더 나은 것도 분명하다. 어떤 식으로 수정이

이루어졌는지를 보는 것도 시 이해에 도움이 된다.

 

수정본의 첫 연은 원본 그대로이다:

 

The world was already here
Serene in its otherness.
It only took you to arrive
On the late afternoon train
To where no one awaited you.

 

둘째 연에선 원본의 단어 'drabness'만 'ordinariness'로 바뀌었다:

 

A town no one ever remembered
Because of its ordinariness
Where you lost your way
Searching for a place to stay
In a maze of identical streets.

 

나머지 두 연에선 시구가 바뀌었다:

 

It was then that you heard,
As if for the very first time,
The sound of your own footsteps
Passing a church clock
Which had stopped at one

 

On the corner of two streets
Emptied by the hot sun.
Two glimpses of the eternal
For you to wonder about
Before resuming your walk.
