시 읽기의 단순한 즐거움 -- Gary Snyder 의 시 한 편

시인 Gary Snyder 가, 아마, 어디 멀리 어느 작은 도서관 라운지에서

있은 문화 행사에 강사로 초빙되어 갔다가 거기서 어머니, 언니와 함께

참석한 어린(?) 소녀와 한두 마디 주고 받았는지 모르겠다. 그리고 얼마

후 그 소녀로부터 운을 맞춰 쓴 시 한 편과 함게 편지를 받는다. 그런 것

같은 얘기를, 시인이 소녀에게 보낸 답시에서 읽으면서 저절로 미소가

지어진다.

그의 최근 시집 "This Present Moment" (2015) 를 동네 도서관

커피솝 서가에서 발견하고 대강 다 여기저기 읽어보다가 한 편 베껴온

시지만, 아래 시 제목을 클릑하면 들을 수 있는, 시인의 낭독을 받아

적은 걸로 하자.

A Letter to M. A. Who Lives Far Away

Dear Melissa,

I do remember you

You had curly hair

And stood by the stair

Up there on Quadra Isle

With a shy smile

Say hello to your mother Jean

I don't remember your sister's name

And that's a shame

But I sort of remember her face

And natural grace

Not all poetry has to rhyme

But this time

I'm writing back, the way you did it

It's to your credit

You got me to write this form

Since real poetry is born

From a formless place

Which is our original face

Zen Buddhists say,

In play.
