소설가/시인 한강(Han Kang)의 소설 "채식주의자"(2007)의 영역본 The Vegetarian (2015)과

젊은 한국계 미국 작가 Paul Yoon의 소설 Snow Hunters를, 읽고 있던 다른 책들보다

먼저 다 읽었다. 아무래도 소설이라서 그렇게 된 것 같다.

 

Snow Hunter는 문체와표현이 더없이 간결하고 아름답다. Paul Yoon의

단편집 Once the Shore 가 읽고 싶어진다.

Eleanor Roosebelt 여사가 한 주에 6일, 거의 빠트리지 않고, 거의 26년간(1936-1962)

쓴 My Day 칼럼 중에서 가려 뽑은 글들을 모은 책이다.

 

"당신들이 흑인들과 테니스를 칠 수 없다면, 어떻게 당신들은 기꺼이 그들이 군에 징집되어

당신들을 위해 죽게는 하나요? 나는 우리 백인들에 대해서 부끄럽습니다. 나도 백인 중의

한 사람이고, 그래서 그들의 그 어리석음과 잔인함이 나를 당혹스럽게 합니다."

서문 말미에 인용된 이란의 현대 여성 시인 Forugh Farrokhzad의 시구

때문에라도 이 책을 도서관 라운지에 그냥 놓고 나올 수 없었다:

 

"창문 하나가 내가 필요로 하는 다다

깨달음과 응시와 침묵의

계기가 될 창문 하나.

이제 호두나무 묘목은

충분히 자랐다

어린 잎새들에게 벽을 설명해 줄 만큼."

 

노래하는 새는 수컷이라는 페르시아 문학의 전통을 뒤집었다는

이란의 여성 시인 E'tessami의 시구도 눈에 들어온다:

 

"한 여성이 새장에서 살았고 새장에서 죽었다.

장미 정원에 있던 이 새의 이름은 결코 불려진 적이 없었다."

 

E'tessami를 "여성이 시인이 될 수 있고 그런 점에선 좋은 시인이 될 수 있다는 것을

여성들에게 증명한" 시인으로 누구는 본다고도 쓰여 있다.
