Myaya Angelou 의 시 "Human Family"

새삼스레 이 시가 생각났다.

누구나 '쉽게' 공감할 시라고 생각했었는데, 정말 그럴까?

얼마 전 일도 같이 생각났다.

산프란시스코에서 지난 여름 이곳으로 이사 온 재일교포 한 분이

우리 몇 사람과 처음 함께 식사하는 자리에서, 자신이 일본에서

태어나 자라고 살면서 겪었다며, 일인에 대해서는 긍정적으로

한국 내국인에 대해서는 부정적으로, 격앙된 말투로, 이야기했었다.

종류나 유형에 따른 명백한 차이를 알지만

그래도 우리는 서로 다르기보다는, 친구여,

더 많이 닮았다네

마야 엔젤로우의 시를 다시 읊고 그녀의 목소리로 다시 듣고 싶어진다.

Human Family

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I've sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I've seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I've not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England's moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we're the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.
