Marianne Moore의 시 "시" 외 세 편

Smoky Hill Libray 라운지에서 "The Complete Poems of

Marianne Moore" (1967)를 발견하고 한 시간쯤 읽어보다가

시 네 편을 일단 카메라에 담아왔다. "Values in Use"와

"To a Snail" 그리고, 내가 갖고 있는 다른 책들에서 전에

읽은 적이 있는, "Poetry"와 "I May, I Might, I Must"다.

 

그런데 이 책에 실린 "Poetry"는 전문이 단 세 줄이긴 하지만

내가 전에 읽은 서른 줄짜리의 다른 '버전'이고, 어쩌면,

시인이 1972년에 84세로 별세하고 이 책이 1967년에 나온

걸로 봐서, 그 최종 수정본일 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다.

온라인에서 찾아보니 맞다.

 

Robert Pinsky: Marianne Moore's "Poetry"에 따르면,

1924년에 발표한 원본 (서른 줄) "Poetry"와 1967년 저

시집에 실린 것 말고도 그 사이에 여러 수정본이 있었다고

한다. 한 쪽이 채 안 되는 글도 40년에 걸쳐 고치고 또

고치게 하는 것, 그게 시다.

 

아래는 1967년 버전의 대강의 번역과 원문 (1924년 원본은

Pinsky의 에세이에):

나, 또한, 그걸 싫어한다.

     하지만, 더없이 경멸하면서, 그걸 읽다 보면, 사람들은 결국

     그것에서 진실의 자리를 발견한다.

 

 

Poetry

 

I, too, dislike it.
     Reading it, however, with a perfect contempt for it, one discovers in
     it, after all, a place for the genuine.

 

 

이해인 시인의 시를 사랑하는 이들이 많은 것 같다. 시인의

"작은 소망"을 읽어보니 당연하겠다.

 

 

시 "I May, I Might, I Must"는 제목과 짧은 본문의 어우러짐이

특유의 묘미를 자아낸다. 예를 들어, 나는 본문을 읽고는 이어서

제목을 읽어보기도 한다.

If you tell me why the fen
appears impassable, I then
will tell you why I think that I
can get across it, if I try.

 

 

Robert Pinsky의 에세이에서 Marianne Moore 시의 스타일에

대해 언급한 부분을 읽으면서, 실은, 내가 "Values in Use"와

"To a Snail" 두 시를 다 그녀의 일종의 '시 쓰기에 관한 시'로도

읽은 걸 떠올렸다. 많은 시인들이 그런 시를 한두 편은 쓰는

것 같다.

 

 

Vlaues in Use

 

 

I attended school and I liked the place --

grass and little locust-leaf shadows like lace.

 

Writing was discussed. They said, "We create

values in the process of living, daren't awit

 

their historic progress." Be abstract

and you'll wish you'd been specific; it's a fact.

 

What was I studying? Vlaues in use,

"Judged on theie own ground." Am I still abstruse?

 

Walking along, a student said off hand,

"'Relevanr' and 'plausible' were words I understood."

 

A pleasing statement, anonymous friend.

Certainly the means must not define the end.

 

 

To a Snail

 

If "compression is the first grace of style,"
you have it. Contractility is a virtue
as modesty is a virtue.
It is not the acquisition of any one thing
that is able to adorn,
or the incidental quality that occurs
as a concomitant of something well said,
that we value in style,
but the principle that is hid:
in the absence of feet, "a method of conclusions" ;
"a knowledge of principles,"
In the curious phenomenon of your occipital horn.
