장춘익 교수가 번역한 책 중에 이 책이 있는 것을 서울 방문 중이던 2017년 겨울에 어떻게 알게 되어서 곧장 서울시립도서관에서 빌려다 대강 어떤 책인가 여기저기 몇 쪽 읽어도 보면서 살핀 적이 있었다. 결론은, 사회철학도가 아닌 내게는 책 서문을 읽어본 것으로 됐다, 였다. 우선 장춘익 교수의 서문이 본문의 아주 훌륭한 요약임이 틀림없다는 생각이 들어서 였다. 하나, "set of sets"나 "고유값" 개념이 적용된 듯한 점이 기억에 남는다. 아래는, 그때 책 서문을 (대부분으로 기억하는데) 발췌해 놓은 거다. 1,300 쪽이 넘는 이 책 내용이 궁금할 분들에게, 내게나 마찬가지로, 다소 도움이 될 수도 있겠다. ( 덧붙임: 정성훈 교수의 서평 )  "루만이 사회학자로서 전 생애에 걸쳐 추구한 것은 ..

덴버 대학 캠퍼스에 있는 'The Book Stack'에서는 책을 기증 받고 팔고 하는 일을 몇몇 자원 봉사자들이 하루 한두 명씩 서로 돌아가며 맡아 하는 것 같다. 그중 두 할머니는 나를 늘 각별히 반겨줄 뿐 아니라 가끔은, 계산하려고 선 내게 책을, 특히 내가 맘에 들어하는 것 같은 책은, 그냥 가져 가라고 한다. 아니라고 해도 안 통한다. T. S. 특별하고 이상한 날이다. 날이라고 했지만 오늘도 어제도 아닌 어제와 오늘에 걸친 하루를 말하는 건데, 하나도 아닌 두 가지 특별한 일이 생겼다. 초등학교(당시 국민학교)나 중학교 때 읽었을, 제목도 잊은 책의 원서 제목을 드디어 알게 되고, 중학교 때 본 영화 '"오케스트라의 소녀"를 결국 다시 볼 수 있었다. 둘 다, 지속적으로는 물론 아니지만, 글쎄, 삼십년도 넘게 생각날 적마다 시도하곤 했던 일이다. 책은 Thomas Baily Aldrich 의 소설 "The Story of A Bad Boy" (1869).
