주인공이나 시공간 배경이 생소한 이야기들은 그래서도 재밌다. 각각 post-apartheid South Africa 의 한 백인 가족, 파리로 가출한 망아지와 그 친구들(까치,개, 쥐), 속초에사는 젊은 Franco-Korean 여인과 속초를 찾은 프랑스 만화가 이야기인 세 소설이 다 '계속 책장을 넘기게 되는' 책들이다. "The Promise"는 올해 부커상을 수상했고 "Winter in Sokcho"는 올해 '번역소설 부문' 부커상 최종심에 올랐다. 망아지 이야기는 Jane Smiley 가 작가인지라 읽게 됐다. 다 도서관 책으로 읽었다. 우리 동네 도서관이 늘 고맙고 자랑스럽다.
